Best MDCAT Books: How to Choose What You Actually Need

You need fewer books than you think. Your board textbooks plus one good MCQ source are enough for most students, as long as you finish them.

Popular MDCAT book names

These are the names students search for most. Each is widely known, but quality can vary between editions and subjects.

Checklist before you buy

  1. Edition: does it say it follows the current PM&DC uniform curriculum?
  2. Coverage: pick any 3 units from the syllabus and check that they are all covered.
  3. Explanations: does it explain answers, or just give an answer key?
  4. Accuracy: try ten MCQs on a topic you know well. Repeated errors are a warning sign.
  5. Length: can you realistically finish it in your available time?

Books or online practice?

Books are good for focused reading, and online practice is better for quick feedback, timed tests and tracking your mistakes. Many students do well with a mix of the two. You can start right now, for free, with our notes and MCQs.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best books for MDCAT preparation?

Start with your FSc textbooks, since the syllabus is built on the same content. Then add one MCQ or practice book per subject that matches the current PM&DC syllabus. No single publisher is best for everyone.

Are KIPS books good for MDCAT?

Many students use them, and the same goes for STEP, Star and Nearpeer. Before you buy any of them, check that the edition is recent, matches the current syllabus, and explains its answers.

Do I need an academy book series if I study on my own?

No. Any source works if it covers the syllabus and gives you plenty of good MCQs. Academy books are designed to fit their own classes, so they may contain things you do not need.

Can I download MDCAT books as a free PDF?

Free PDFs of commercial books are often unauthorised, outdated or poor quality. For free material, use official textbooks from your board and legitimate free sites. MDCAT Ace is free too.

Are old MDCAT books still useful?

Partly. The basic science stays the same, but the syllabus and paper have changed. Compare each chapter with the current syllabus, and skip anything not listed.
