Fundamental Concepts of Chemistry: MDCAT Notes and MCQs

Mole concept

  • 1 mole = 6.022 × 1023 particles (Avogadro's number, NA) = gram atomic/molecular/formula mass.
  • Moles = mass / molar mass = particles / NA = volume of gas at STP / 22.414 dm3.
  • 1 mole of H2O = 18 g = 6.022 × 1023 molecules = 3 × 6.022 × 1023 atoms.

Stoichiometry

Coefficients of a balanced equation give mole ratios. E.g. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O: 2 mol H2 ≡ 1 mol O2 ≡ 2 mol H2O. Steps: mass → moles → use mole ratio → moles of product → mass/volume.

Limiting reactant

  • The reactant consumed first; it controls the maximum amount of product. The other is in excess.
  • Method: convert each reactant to moles, divide by its coefficient — the smallest value is limiting (or calculate product from each; the smaller amount wins).

Yield

% yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield) × 100

Theoretical yield is calculated from the limiting reactant; actual yield is less due to side reactions, reversible reactions, loss during handling.

PMDC learning outcomes for this unit
  • Moles and Avogadro's Number: 1.1 Construct mole ratios from balanced equations for use as conversion factors in stoichiometric problems.
  • Moles and Avogadro's Number: 1.2 Perform stoichiometric calculations with balanced equations using moles, representative particles, masses and volumes of gases (at STP).
  • Limiting and Excess Reactants: 1.3 Explain the limiting reagent in reaction
  • Limiting and Excess Reactants: 1.4 Calculate the maximum number of products produced and the amount of any un-reacted excess reagent
  • Yield: 1.5 Given information from which any two of the following may be determined, calculate the third: theoretical yield, actual yield, percentage yield.
  • Yield: 1.6 Calculate the theoretical yield and the percent yield when given the balanced equation, the amount of reactants and the actual yield.

Fundamental Concepts of Chemistry MCQs with answers

Q1
The number of molecules in 9 g of water is:
A9 × 10²³
B3.011 × 10²³
C6.022 × 10²³
D1.204 × 10²⁴
Show answer
Answer: B (3.011 × 10²³). 9 g H2O = 0.5 mol → 0.5 × 6.022 × 10²³ = 3.011 × 10²³ molecules.
Q2
The volume occupied by 2 moles of an ideal gas at STP is:
A44.8 dm³
B11.2 dm³
C22.4 dm³
D67.2 dm³
Show answer
Answer: A (44.8 dm³). 1 mol occupies 22.4 dm³ at STP, so 2 mol = 44.8 dm³.
Q3
In the reaction 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, if 4 moles of H₂ react with 3 moles of O₂, the limiting reactant is:
AH₂
BBoth are limiting
CH₂O
DO₂
Show answer
Answer: A (H₂). 4 mol H2 needs only 2 mol O2; H2 runs out first (4/2 = 2 < 3/1 = 3).
Q4
Theoretical yield is 20 g and actual yield is 15 g. The percentage yield is:
A75%
B25%
C50%
D133%
Show answer
Answer: A (75%). (15/20) × 100 = 75%.
Q5
The number of atoms in 1 mole of CO₂ is:
A6.022 × 10²³
B1.806 × 10²⁴
C1.204 × 10²⁴
D3.011 × 10²³
Show answer
Answer: B (1.806 × 10²⁴). Each CO2 has 3 atoms → 3 × 6.022 × 10²³ = 1.806 × 10²⁴.
Q6
How many grams of CO₂ are formed by complete combustion of 12 g of carbon (C + O₂ → CO₂)?
A44 g
B12 g
C32 g
D22 g
Show answer
Answer: A (44 g). 12 g C = 1 mol → 1 mol CO2 = 44 g.
