Rotational and Circular Motion: MDCAT Notes and MCQs

Angular displacement

  • Angle subtended at the centre by a body moving along a circle; θ = S/r. Vector along the axis (right-hand rule) for small angles.
  • Radian: angle subtended at the centre by an arc equal to the radius.
  • 1 revolution = 360° = 2π rad; 1 rad = 57.3°; 1° = 0.01745 rad.

Angular velocity & acceleration

  • ω = Δθ/Δt (rad s−1); ω = 2πf = 2π/T. Direction along axis (right-hand rule).
  • α = Δω/Δt (rad s−2).

Linear ↔ angular

LinearRelation
DisplacementS = rθ
Velocityv = rω (v = r × ω)
Tangential accelerationat = rα
Centripetal accelerationac = v²/r = rω² (towards centre)

Equations of angular motion mirror linear ones: ωf = ωi + αt; θ = ωit + ½αt²; 2αθ = ωf² − ωi². Centripetal force Fc = mv²/r = mrω².

All points on a rotating rigid body have the same ω but different v — points farther from the axis move faster.

Q1
One radian is approximately equal to:
A60°
B57.3°
C45°
D90°
Show answer
Answer: B (57.3°). 1 rad = 180°/π ≈ 57.3°.
Q2
One revolution equals:
Aπ/2 rad
Bπ rad
C2π rad
D360 rad
Show answer
Answer: C (2π rad). 360° = 2π rad.
Q3
The relation between linear and angular velocity is:
Av = ω/r
Bv = rω
Cv = rω²
Dv = r²ω
Show answer
Answer: B (v = rω). v = rω.
Q4
A wheel of radius 0.5 m rotates at 10 rad/s. The linear speed of a point on its rim is:
A10 m/s
B5 m/s
C20 m/s
D0.05 m/s
Show answer
Answer: B (5 m/s). v = rω = 0.5 × 10 = 5 m/s.
Q5
The SI unit of angular acceleration is:
Arev s⁻¹
Bm s⁻²
Crad s⁻¹
Drad s⁻²
Show answer
Answer: D (rad s⁻²). α = Δω/Δt → rad s⁻².
Q6
Tangential acceleration is related to angular acceleration by:
Aaₜ = rω²
Baₜ = r²α
Caₜ = rα
Daₜ = α/r
Show answer
Answer: C (aₜ = rα). aₜ = rα.
Q7
A body moves in a circle with constant speed. Its acceleration is:
ATangential
BDirected away from the centre
CDirected towards the centre
DZero
Show answer
Answer: C (Directed towards the centre). Changing direction requires centripetal acceleration v²/r towards the centre.
