Acellular Life: MDCAT Notes and MCQs

Viruses โ€” the basics

  • Viruses are acellular, obligate intracellular parasites: no metabolism, no ribosomes, reproduce only inside a living host cell.
  • A complete virus particle is a virion: nucleic acid core (either DNA or RNA, never both) + protein coat (capsid, made of capsomeres). Some have a lipid envelope taken from the host membrane (e.g. HIV, influenza).
  • Size โ‰ˆ 20โ€“250 nm; seen only with an electron microscope. Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) was the first virus studied (Ivanowsky, 1892).

Classification

BasisTypes / examples
Capsid shapeHelical (TMV), polyhedral / icosahedral (adenovirus, polio), complex (bacteriophage T4), enveloped (HIV, influenza)
Nucleic aciddsDNA (pox, herpes, adeno), ssDNA (parvo), dsRNA (reovirus), ssRNA (polio, TMV, HIV, influenza)
HostPlant viruses (TMV), animal viruses, bacterial viruses = bacteriophages
DiseasePolio, measles, mumps, hepatitis, rabies, herpes, influenza, AIDS, COVID-19

Bacteriophage life cycles

  • Lytic: attach โ†’ inject DNA โ†’ replicate โ†’ assemble โ†’ lyse host (virulent phage, e.g. T4).
  • Lysogenic: phage DNA joins host chromosome as a prophage and is copied with it (temperate phage, e.g. lambda).

HIV & AIDS

  • Cause: Human Immunodeficiency Virus โ€” an enveloped retrovirus with 2 copies of ssRNA and the enzyme reverse transcriptase (RNA โ†’ DNA).
  • Target: helper T-lymphocytes (CD4+ cells) and macrophages โ†’ collapse of cell-mediated immunity.
  • Transmission: unprotected sexual contact, infected blood/transfusion, shared needles/syringes, mother to child (placenta, birth, breast-feeding). Not by touching, sharing food, mosquitoes.
  • Symptoms: early flu-like illness, then long latent period; AIDS stage โ†’ weight loss, chronic diarrhoea, fever, swollen lymph nodes, opportunistic infections (TB, pneumonia, Kaposi's sarcoma).
  • Diagnosis: ELISA (screening) confirmed by Western blot / PCR. No cure; antiretroviral therapy controls it.
PMDC learning outcomes for this unit
  • Viruses: 1.1 Classify viruses on basis of their structure / number of strands / diseases / hosts etc.
  • AIDS and HIV Infection: 1.2 Identify symptoms, mode of transmission and cause of viral disease (AIDS)

Acellular Life MCQs with answers

Practise and track your score โ†’
Q1
Which of the following is TRUE for all viruses?
AThey contain both DNA and RNA
BThey can reproduce in cell-free media
CThey have 70S ribosomes
DThey contain either DNA or RNA
Show answer
Answer: D (They contain either DNA or RNA). A virus contains only one type of nucleic acid โ€” DNA or RNA โ€” and must use a host cell to reproduce.
Q2
The protein coat of a virus is called:
AEnvelope
BProphage
CCapsid
DCapsomere
Show answer
Answer: C (Capsid). The capsid is the protein coat; it is made of subunits called capsomeres.
Q3
Bacteriophage T4 has which type of structure?
AComplex
BHelical
CSpherical enveloped
DPolyhedral
Show answer
Answer: A (Complex). T4 has a polyhedral head attached to a helical tail with tail fibres โ€” a complex structure.
Q4
HIV primarily destroys:
ARed blood cells
BHelper T-cells (CD4+)
CB-lymphocytes
DPlatelets
Show answer
Answer: B (Helper T-cells (CD4+)). HIV binds the CD4 receptor on helper T-cells, leading to collapse of immunity.
Q5
The enzyme that allows HIV to make DNA from its RNA genome is:
AReverse transcriptase
BLigase
CDNA polymerase
DRNA polymerase
Show answer
Answer: A (Reverse transcriptase). Retroviruses carry reverse transcriptase, which copies RNA into DNA.
Q6
Which is NOT a mode of HIV transmission?
ABlood transfusion
BMother to foetus
CSharing infected syringes
DMosquito bite
Show answer
Answer: D (Mosquito bite). HIV is not transmitted by insects, handshakes or sharing food.
Q7
In the lysogenic cycle, viral DNA integrated into the bacterial chromosome is called:
AVirion
BCapsomere
CProphage
DPlasmid
Show answer
Answer: C (Prophage). Integrated phage DNA is a prophage; it replicates along with the host chromosome.
Q8
Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) contains:
AssRNA
BdsRNA
CssDNA
DdsDNA
Show answer
Answer: A (ssRNA). TMV is a helical plant virus with single-stranded RNA.
