Reproduction: MDCAT Notes and MCQs

Male reproductive system

  • Testes lie in the scrotum (2–3 Β°C below body temperature, needed for spermatogenesis).
  • Seminiferous tubules produce sperm; Sertoli cells nourish developing sperm; interstitial (Leydig) cells secrete testosterone.
  • Pathway: seminiferous tubules β†’ epididymis (storage & maturation) β†’ vas deferens β†’ ejaculatory duct β†’ urethra.
  • Accessory glands: seminal vesicles (fructose-rich fluid, β‰ˆ 60% of semen), prostate (alkaline fluid), Cowper's/bulbourethral glands (mucus).
  • Hormones: GnRH (hypothalamus) β†’ FSH (stimulates spermatogenesis via Sertoli cells) and LH/ICSH (stimulates testosterone secretion).

Female reproductive system

  • Ovaries: produce ova and hormones (oestrogen, progesterone). Oviduct (Fallopian tube): site of fertilization. Uterus: implantation and development; inner lining = endometrium. Cervix, vagina.

Menstrual cycle (β‰ˆ 28 days)

PhaseDaysEvents / hormones
Menstrual1–5Endometrium sheds (fall in progesterone & oestrogen)
Follicular (proliferative)6–13FSH β†’ Graafian follicle develops β†’ secretes oestrogen β†’ endometrium repairs and thickens
Ovulationβ‰ˆ 14High oestrogen triggers LH surge β†’ follicle ruptures, secondary oocyte released
Luteal (secretory)15–28LH β†’ corpus luteum β†’ progesterone (+ oestrogen) maintains endometrium; inhibits FSH/LH. No fertilization β†’ corpus luteum degenerates β†’ menstruation

If pregnancy occurs, hCG from the embryo maintains the corpus luteum (basis of pregnancy tests). Menopause β‰ˆ 45–50 years.

Sexually transmitted diseases

DiseaseCausative agentMain symptoms
GonorrhoeaNeisseria gonorrhoeae (bacterium)Painful urination, pus discharge; can cause sterility
SyphilisTreponema pallidum (spirochaete)Painless sore (chancre) β†’ rash β†’ late damage to heart, brain
Genital herpesHerpes simplex virus (HSV-2)Painful blisters/ulcers; recurrent
ChlamydiaChlamydia trachomatisOften silent; discharge, pelvic inflammatory disease
AIDSHIV (retrovirus)Immune failure, opportunistic infections
PMDC learning outcomes for this unit
  • Human Reproductive system: 8.1 Describe the functions of various parts of the male & female reproductive systems and the hormones that regulate those functions
  • Menstrual cycle: 8.2 Describe the menstrual cycle (female reproductive cycle) emphasizing the role of hormones
  • Sexually transmitted diseases: 8.3 List the common sexually transmitted diseases along with their causative agents and main symptoms

Reproduction MCQs with answers

Practise and track your score β†’
Q1
Testosterone is secreted by:
ASeminiferous tubules
BSertoli cells
CInterstitial (Leydig) cells
DEpididymis
Show answer
Answer: C (Interstitial (Leydig) cells). Leydig cells, stimulated by LH (ICSH), secrete testosterone.
Q2
Sperms are stored and mature in the:
AEpididymis
BSeminal vesicle
CUrethra
DProstate
Show answer
Answer: A (Epididymis). The epididymis stores sperm and allows them to mature.
Q3
Fertilization in humans normally takes place in the:
AOviduct (Fallopian tube)
BUterus
CVagina
DOvary
Show answer
Answer: A (Oviduct (Fallopian tube)). The ovum is fertilized in the oviduct; the zygote then implants in the uterus.
Q4
Ovulation is triggered by a surge of:
AProgesterone
BLH
CFSH
DProlactin
Show answer
Answer: B (LH). A mid-cycle LH surge causes rupture of the Graafian follicle.
Q5
The corpus luteum secretes mainly:
ATestosterone
BFSH
CLH
DProgesterone
Show answer
Answer: D (Progesterone). The corpus luteum secretes progesterone (and some oestrogen) to maintain the endometrium.
Q6
Repair and thickening of the endometrium in the follicular phase is due to:
ALH
BOxytocin
COestrogen
DProgesterone
Show answer
Answer: C (Oestrogen). Oestrogen from the developing follicle stimulates proliferation of the endometrium.
Q7
Syphilis is caused by:
AHerpes simplex virus
BNeisseria gonorrhoeae
CTreponema pallidum
DCandida albicans
Show answer
Answer: C (Treponema pallidum). Treponema pallidum, a spirochaete bacterium, causes syphilis.
Q8
Which STD is caused by a virus?
ASyphilis
BChlamydia
CGenital herpes
DGonorrhoea
Show answer
Answer: C (Genital herpes). Genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2.
Q9
The testes are located in the scrotum because spermatogenesis requires:
ATemperature 2–3 Β°C below body temperature
BProtection from hormones
CHigher temperature
DMore blood supply
Show answer
Answer: A (Temperature 2–3 Β°C below body temperature). Sperm production needs a slightly lower temperature than core body temperature.
